The Polikarpow TB-2 ( Russian Поликарпов ТБ-2 ) was a heavy Soviet bomber . It was created a little later than the successful Tupolev TB-1 and was intended to replace it. Ultimately, however, the TB-3 proved to be more powerful and so the TB-2 did not get beyond the prototype stage.

development

The TB-2 was a double-decker with an extremely shorter lower wing than the upper wing, which also carried the two BMW VI M-17 licensed engines . It was made of wood with a plywood panel . The structure was connected to one another by very inclined rods made of round steel. The landing gear was rigid and had a grinding spur at the stern .

In 1927 development work began under the designation L-2 . In the fall of 1930, the aircraft began its flight tests. Despite the aerodynamically clean design, the performance data at that time no longer corresponded to the usual standards, and the one-and-a-half-decker design for bombers of this size was also outdated, so that this type of aircraft did not go into series production.

The type abbreviation TB stands for T jaschyoly B ombardirowschtschik (Тяжёлый бомбардировщик), the Russian name for heavy bomber aircraft.
