Polina Gurýewa ( Russian Полина Александровна Гурьева Polina Alexandrowna Gurjewa ; born October 5, 1999 in Ashgabat , Turkmenistan ) is a Turkmen weightlifter . At the 2020 Summer Olympics , she took second place in the class up to 59 kilograms , winning the first Olympic medal in the history of sports in the independent state of Turkmenistan.

Career

Gurýewa was born in 1999 to parents of Russian origin in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat . She dedicated herself to gymnastics as a child before starting weightlifting in 2011. After graduating from school, Gurýewa began studying sport science at the Turkmen State Institute for Sport in Ashgabat, where she also trained at the same time.

In 2018, at the age of 18, Gurýewa took part in the Junior World Championships in Tashkent , where she finished sixth in the weight class up to 63 kg in a push-and-tear duel. At the next edition of the Junior World Championship in Suva in 2019 , Gurýewa came fourth in the weight class up to 64 kg. Also in 2019, the Turkmen athlete qualified for the final of the Asian Championships in Ningbo , China , where she finished eighth with an overall result of 211 kg. In September 2019, Gurýewa took part in the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships in Pattaya , Thailand . With a total performance of 198 kg, she was unable to match her performance at the Asian Championships in April and came in 28th.

Before the 2021 season, Gurýewa changed weight class and has been competing in the lightweight up to 59 kg since then. At the Asia Cup 2020, which was held in April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic , she finished fourth with a result of 211 kg.

At the Summer Olympics, Gurýewa was part of the nine-man Turkmen team and again competed in the weight class up to 59 kg. In the final competition on July 27, 2021, Gurýewa made valid attempts of 93 kg and 96 kg in the snatch, which put her in third place after Kuo Hsing-chun from Taiwan and the French Dora Tchakounté after the first sub-discipline . In the push, the Turkmen achieved a result of 121 kg and thus the second best performance in the field. With a personal best of 217 kg, Gurýewa took second place behind the Olympic champion Kuo Hsing-chun and thus won the silver medal. Gurýewa won the first medal for a Turkmen athlete since the independence of the former Soviet republic in 1991.

Perception in Turkmenistan

The reactions to Gurýewa's historic success were remarkably low in their homeland. In the authoritarian-ruled Turkmenistan, sporting successes are regularly part of the state staging, but in the case of the first Turkmen medalist, this was not the case. Immediately after the success of the Turkmen weightlifter, the state newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan reported on winning the silver medal, but in the following days the topic was almost completely ignored by the state media. In the sparse reporting in the state media, the name Gurýewas was avoided and President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow did not mention the first medal win by a Turkmen athlete at the Olympic Games. According to Turkmen sources, the reason for this reluctance was Gurýewa's origins, since as a child of Russian-born parents, she did not correspond to the state ideal of successful Turkmen athletes.

More than three weeks after winning the silver medal, Gurýewa's success was officially recognized by the state at a ceremony in the capital, Ashgabat. On behalf of the President, his son gave Serdar Berdimuhamedov the silver medalist award Honored Master of Sports of Turkmenistan , as well as a bonus for their success, the key to a three-room apartment in the capital, an SUV and 50,000 US dollars . Gurýewa dedicated her success on this occasion to the President of Turkmenistan and the entire population of the country. She also thanked the President for promoting sport in Turkmenistan.
