Politician salaries (Austria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The colloquial term politician salaries in this article refers to the gross wage (or salary, or remuneration , or income ) that a politician receives in one month.

The "remuneration of the highest federal organs " ( Federal President , members of the Federal Government , State Secretaries , President of the Court of Auditors , members of the Ombudsman ), "the members of the National Council and the Federal Council and the members of the European Parliament sent by Austria " are set out in the Federal Remuneration Act (BBezG ) determined by law. The “remuneration of the highest organs of the federal states ” is not specified in it, but only limited upwards. However, these maximum amounts are, as a rule, also provided for in the federal states' remuneration laws.

The starting amount

In 1997, a starting amount of 100,000 Schilling gross per month (7,267.28 euros) was set for each member of the National Council. According to the constitution, this amount must be adjusted annually by the President of the Court of Auditors. In 2017 it was 8,755.80 euros. An increase in salaries by 1.5% was planned for 2018, but the National Council decided on a zero wage round .

From this starting amount, the other above-mentioned bodies receive a certain percentage that is rounded to ten cents (e.g. the Federal President 280%, as of 2018, i.e. 24,883.90 euros gross per month).

If an organ were entitled to several remuneration at the same time, it would only be entitled to the higher one. The salaries of the highest governing bodies are paid each month in advance.

Special payment, continued payment and other claims

In addition to the remuneration, each body is entitled to special payments of two additional monthly salaries per year as 13th and 14th monthly salaries. As is usual with civil servants, these are paid in two parts, i.e. one part every quarter (March 1, June 1, September 1, December 1).

If organs are not entitled to continue their gainful employment, they are entitled to continued payment of 75% of the monthly salary on request upon termination of their function, taking into account the special payments on a pro-rata basis.

The Federal President deserves an official residence. The Federal President, the members of the Federal Government, the President of the National Council, the President of the Federal Council and the President of the Court of Auditors and the State Secretaries are entitled to a company car for which they pay a monthly contribution of 1.5% of the purchase price (but no more than 7% of the starting amount ) have to perform.

Reimbursement of expenses

The members of the National Council and the Federal Council are entitled to a capped remuneration for all expenses they incur in exercising their mandate (e.g. travel costs, accommodation costs, office costs). The maximum reimbursable amount is increased depending on the member's origin and arrival time.

No waiver

The organs may not waive cash benefits under this federal law.

Politician pensions

A new pension entitlement for a political office has not been possible in Austria since 1997. Previously, entitlement to a politician's pension could be acquired through four years of employment in a government or eight to ten years of membership in parliament or a state parliament.
