Polperro ( Cornish Porthpyra [KK], Porth Pera [UCR] ) is a small fishing village on the south coast of the county of Cornwall in south-west England .

The place is on the river Pol , 6 km west of the famous seaside resort Looe and 40 km west of the city of Plymouth . It has a picturesque fishing port, which is surrounded by densely packed houses. Polperro is now a popular destination in summer and lives mainly from tourism , whereas traditional fishing is no longer of great economic importance. After all, twelve commercially operated fishing boats are still in the harbor today. The tide difference (tidal range) in Polperro is about 3.5 meters. When the tide is low, the harbor dries up and the boats stand on the bottom in the silt.

The local smuggler museum, which documents the history of what was once very profitable smuggling on the south coast of Cornwall, is of tourist importance.

During the Second World War , Oskar Kokoschka had withdrawn to this place in order to escape the attacks of the German Air Force on London . His former student Hilde Goldschmidt from Dresden visited him here in 1941 .
