Looe ( Cornish : Logh ) is a small coastal town ( civil parish ) in the south-east of the English county of Cornwall in the United Kingdom . Around 5112 people live in Looe (2011 census). The fishing port is a center for shark fishing , and blue sharks are more common off the coast .
location
Looe is 20 miles west of Plymouth , 28 miles east of St Austell and 7 miles south of Liskeard . The river of the same name divides the city into East Looe and West Looe, both of which are connected by a bridge. Two bays not far from Looe offer a view of the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean : Looe Bay with a sandy beach and Hannafore Bay with the Hannafore lookout point.
history
The remains of a Celtic chapel and a Benedictine priory have been found in Looe . In 1587 the place received parish status, West Looe (also known as Porpighan) was founded as an independent parish in 1325.
traffic
From 1828 to 1910 Looe was the sea end point of the Liskeard and Looe Union Canal , which was used for freight traffic to the port of Looe. Since 1860 Looe is the terminus of the Looe Valley Line , which connects the place with Liskeard on the main line between Penzance and Plymouth . The railway, which was initially built to relieve the Liskeard and Looe Union Canal parallel to it for freight transport with copper, tin ore and granite from the southern part of Bodmin Moor , has been used for passenger transport since 1879. Since 1901, the trains on the line, previously isolated from the rest of the British railway network, have been guided to Liskeard via a connecting curve. In 1963 the line was to be closed as part of the Beeching Ax , but was rejected by the then Minister of Transport Barbara Castle . Due to the inadequate road conditions at the time, there were no suitable alternatives for the railway. Looe is served by 12 pairs of trains on weekdays, eight pairs of trains run on Sundays, but not from November to March.
Looe is mainly connected to the road network via the A387 road , via which the A374 road to Torpoint (with a ferry connection to Plymouth) to the east and the A38 road to the west of Plymouth , the important east-west link between Plymouth and Bodmin , is reached. From the north and west, only small side roads lead to Looe.
Looe Island
Off the coast, about a mile from Looe, south across Hannafore Bay is Looe Island, also known as St George's Island. It is managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust as a restricted access nature reserve. Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea landed here on his way to Glastonbury .
Duloe stone circle
The Duloe oval stone circle is located near the village of Duloe, 8.0 km north of Looe. Its original size is unknown as it was relocated in 1861. It consists of eight light quartzite stones. The height of the stones varies, with the largest in the south weighing over 12 tons and being 2.65 meters high.
