Polyarthritis ("joint inflammation in several joints") is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that can affect the joints , organs, bursa and tendon sheaths . Chronic polyarthritis is called rheumatoid arthritis . Women are three times as likely to be affected as men.

Demarcation

Joint pain without inflammatory changes is called arthralgia , and with inflammation arthritis . In monoarthritis one joint is affected at oligoarthritis two to four. If five or more joints are affected, one speaks of polyarthritis.

causes

Polyarthritis can be a side effect of infectious diseases , such as Ross River fever , tuberculosis or Whipple's disease . In young women who come into frequent contact with young children, acute polyarthritis is often linked to a parvovirus B19 infection. It can also occur in infections with hepatitis B , hepatitis C , HIV , Epstein-Barr and rubella .

As an extraintestinal manifestation, polyarthritis occurs in Crohn's disease , less often in ulcerative colitis .

Symptoms

The first signs of polyarthritis are pain with movement or pressure, overheating of the joints, or swelling. The fingers and wrists are most commonly affected by the disease. In addition, the affected joints can become stiff in the morning. Accompanying symptoms can be general symptoms such as exhaustion, weakness , loss of appetite or fever .

Since the tendon sheaths can also be affected, tendinitis often occurs in the hand area. This can tear the tendon.

The so-called rheumatoid nodules occur in about 30% of patients. These form in the area of tendons, ligaments and protruding bones. The size depends on the inflammatory activity of the polyarthritis.
