Polypterus teugelsi is a freshwater fish from the family of the Flösselhechte (Polypteridae), which is endemic to the upper Cross River basin in southwestern Cameroon .

features

Polypterus teugelsi becomes a maximum of 41.5 centimeters long. The elongated body covered with ganoid scales is approximately round in cross-section in the front two thirds. The last third of the body is flattened laterally. The body height is 7.9 to 10.8 times included in the standard length . The head is flattened, the mouth at the end with a protruding upper jaw. The lips are fleshy. The eye diameter is 7.1 to 11.3 times included in the head length. The length in front of the first raft is 46.7 to 54.8% of the standard length. The number of vertebrae is 63 to 65. The number of dorsal fleas is 6 to 7. They do not reach forward to the rear edge of the pectoral fins. The anal fin is far back, just before the caudal fin. Their base is short.

Polypterus teugelsi has 63 to 65 scales in a row along the sideline , 37 to 40 scales in a row around the body, 28 to 33 scales in front of the first flipper and 48 to 51 scales in front of the pelvic fins. The top and sides of the body are olive colored and show a network of black markings, the belly is orange, the pectoral fins black.

Way of life

Polypterus teugelsi lives in small, shaded rainforest rivers . Like all pike, it feeds predatory on a variety of prey.
