The Pompeian Bank in the Park on the Ilm

The Pompejanische Bank is a bench made from Berkaer red sandstone in the Park on the Ilm in Weimar opposite the house of Charlotte von Stein on the Ackerwand. It was erected in 1799 by a Mainz sculptor named Schmidt, the design was made in 1797 by Johann Friedrich Rudolf Steiner . The bank has stood at the exit of the park not far from the Duchess Anna Amalia Library since 1825 and commemorates Duchess Anna Amalia's trip to Italy from 1788 to 1790 .

A painting by the painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein , the so-called "Goethe-Tischbein", has survived which shows the Duchess in Pompeii on such a round bench ( exedra ) in front of the tomb of the priestess Mammia on Gräberstrasse. This painting can be found in the Klassikstiftung Weimar under the inventory number: KGe / 00530 . The Weimar bench has the same ornamental decoration, such as lion-griffin feet as the cheeks that close the bench, and arabesque motifs on the seat backs as the antique original. In contrast to this, however, it has no grave inscription. In Pompeii there are two opposite benches on Gräberstrasse, which were also painted by Jakob Philipp Hackert . Originally, this bench also had stone vases as jewelry, but these were lost. Even the reconstructions made in 1999 and 2004 are no longer in place as a result of vandalism .
