Pompey of Planta

Pompejus Planta (* 1570 ; † February 25, 1621 in Rietberg ) was one of the leaders of the Spanish-Austrian party in the Graubünden turmoil . He came from the reformed Zernez branch of the Bündner ministerial family of the Planta .

Life

He studied in Basel and converted to Catholicism after graduating. As a member of the Planta family, he soon held important positions. In 1614 he became Vogt of the Bishop of Chur in Fürstenau and Hereditary Marshal. Together with his older brother Rudolf he led the Austro-Spanish party in the Three Leagues. His opponents from the French-Venetian party staged a criminal court in Thusis in 1618 , which outlawed the Planta brothers and sentenced them to death.

On February 25, 1621, Pompey was murdered by his opponent Jörg Jenatsch in the presence of his daughter Lucretia at Rietberg Castle in Domleschg . Jenatsch, accompanied by Blasius Alexander , Ensign Gallus im Ried and the brothers Carls and Nikolaus von Hohenbalken, rode up from Grüsch .

Planta had allegedly hidden with his dog above the chimney in the tower, but the dog's whimpering gave him away. According to tradition, his heart was torn out of his body. However, it is questionable whether this happened. In Graubünden, however, this story is part of the tradition and is now part of the folk history treasure.

Pompejus Planta is probably the most famous of all Planta, as the poet Conrad Ferdinand Meyer set a literary monument to him and his daughter Catharina Lukretia in the novel Jürg Jenatsch .
