Ponce Island is an island off the north coast of the Trinity Peninsula at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula . In the group of Duroch Islands , it is 160 m east of Ortiz Island , 500 m southeast of Largo Island and 1.5 km northeast of the Chilean Bernardo O'Higgins station .
The Canadian geologist Martin Halpern (* 1937) from the University of Wisconsin made the designation during the course of surveying the area around the island between 1961 and 1962. It is named after Lautaro Ponce, head of Chilean research activities in Antarctica from the Universidad de Chile , who provided the scientists from the University of Wisconsin with logistical support on site.
