The Pont Wilson is a road bridge in Lyon over the Rhône . It connects the Rue Childebert in the 2nd arrondissement on the peninsula formed by the Saône and Rhône with the Rue Servient in the 3rd arrondissement on the left bank.

The next bridge upstream is the Pont Lafayette , downstream is the Pont de la Guillotière, then the Pont de l'Université .

description

The 220 m long and 20 m wide bridge has four lanes in one-way traffic from the left, eastern to the right, western bank as well as two 4.5 m wide sidewalks and cycle paths.

It consists of four segment arches with spans of 45 + 49 + 49 + 45 m and a 19 m wide round arch. The western arch on the right in the direction of the river disappears almost halfway under a later widening of the promenade. The left arch spans the quay with the banks and a cycle path. Another path leads under the arch.

Each bridge field consists of two parallel, 5.05 m wide arches made of limestone at a distance of 10.8 m, which are supported on transom joints on the abutments and on the approximately 3 m wide masonry pillars. The bridge deck consists of an elevated reinforced concrete slab that spans the space between the arches.

history

The discussions that had been going on since 1907 about the construction of a suspension bridge called Pont de la Victoire ended in 1912 with the decision to build an arch bridge based on the Paul Séjourné system. Work began in October 1912 and was probably completed in 1916 during the First World War . However, the inauguration took place on July 14, 1918, the national holiday , with a parade of American, British, Italian and French troops. It was named after Woodrow Wilson , the President of the United States who had entered the war the year before.

During the Second World War , the left arch was blown up by German troops in 1944. In 1948 it was restored identically.
