The Pont de l'Université is a road bridge over the Rhône in Lyon between the Rue de l'Université on the left bank and the more than eight-lane Quai Dr Gailleton, which runs along the right bank . As an extension of the bridge, Rue Sainte-Hélène leads across the peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône .

The next bridge upstream is the Pont de la Guillotière , the next bridge downstream is the Pont Galliéni .

description

The need for a bridge at this point has been debated since 1844, but was only seen as urgent after the construction of some university buildings on the left bank. The bridge, initially called Pont des Facultés , was finally built between 1899 and 1903 . The planning of the building was u. a. Created by Jean Résal , who had recently designed the Pont Alexandre III in Paris.

The altogether 240 m long structure consists of three flat segmental arches and a small round arch made of masonry over the flood bed of the left bank. The segment arches have spans of 67.50 m + 72.50 m + 67.50 m and each consist of eight parallel truss - steel girders with cross braces on which the bridge deck is elevated.

The arches are supported by fighting joints on the abutments and on the masonry pillars, which are clad with limestone and have large-format letters RF on a palm leaf (for République Française ; the palm leaf symbolizes victory). On the pillars are cast-iron pillars made of ornaments, which are crowned by a rooster. The abutments on the left bank bear the Lyon coat of arms, on them are ornamental stone columns. The corresponding pillars on the right bank were removed as part of recent road construction work.

The 20 m wide bridge deck is divided into four lanes, which run as a one-way street from the left to the right bank, and two 4.50 m wide sidewalks. The bridge deck is bordered by ornate cast-iron balustrades , designed by the sculptor based in Lyon Labranche and the foundry E. Capitain-Gény which now to Joinville (Haute-Marne) were carried out belonging Bussy.

The middle arch was blown up by the Resistance in September 1944 , soon after it was replaced by a makeshift bridge and rebuilt after the war.
