history

Weir and lock system with the bridge in the background

Construction of the Pont du Port-à-l'Anglais began in 1913. Due to the First World War, the completion was delayed, so that the bridge was not opened to traffic until 1928. After being damaged in World War II, the bridge was repaired in 1946. In 1996 the building was declared a Monument Historique .

Construction and location

The Pont du Port-à-l'Anglais is designed as a cable-stayed bridge based on Albert Gisclard's system . The bridge has a total length of 240 meters and is located directly at the weir and lock system Port-à-l'Anglais (French: Barrage éclusé de Port-à-l'Anglais ). The main opening of the bridge spans 130 meters, while the two secondary openings are almost 60 meters wide. The bridge piers stand on the dams that separate the lock canals on both banks from the main stream. The shape of the pylons is based on triumphal arches.
