Ponte Nova da Cava da Velha
The Ponte Nova da Cava da Velha (also Ponte Nova or Ponte da Cava da Velha ) is a Roman stone bridge in northern Portugal . It spans about three kilometers south of Castro Laboreiro on the edge of the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês over the Rio Castro Laboreiro .
history
The bridge was probably built in the 1st century. It was re-paved around the 13th century. In 1986 she was granted the status of a Monumento Nacional . However, the structure is missing from the two most extensive lists of Roman bridges.
description
The construction consists of two steeply inclined ramps about three meters wide that rest on two round arches of very different sizes. The larger one has a span of 10.5 meters and a height of 7.5 meters, the smaller one has a span of only 1.7 meters and a height of 3.3 meters.
The arch stones are hewn, the paving consists of large stone slabs. Upstream and downstream breakwaters are installed to strengthen the support pillars and protect them from the force of the water.
