The Ponte das Taipas is a flagstone bridge over the Ave River near Caldas das Taipas near Guimarães in northern Portugal .

history

Contrary to speculations to the contrary , the bridge built from precisely hewn granite stones is not of Roman origin , but was built in modern times. The existence of a Roman and / or medieval predecessor building is not excluded.

description

The approximately 60 m long bridge rests on 34 supporting pillars, each almost 2 m apart. The approx. 5.5 m wide and covered by numerous slabs drive and sidewalk is secured laterally by numerous approx. 25 cm high stone blocks; this type of construction is probably part of the original inventory and would therefore be almost unique in Europe for such bridges.

The so-called Trajansstein (Pedra de Trajano) , a huge granite block with a Latin inscription from the year 103 AD, is located near the village church . The block certainly had a meaning already in pre-Roman times, from which the reason for the affixing of the inscription could arise. The thermal baths of Caldas das Taipas were already known in Roman times; there are signs of the presence of thermal baths .
