Pontifical Academy of the Immaculate Conception

The Pontifical Academy of the Immaculate Conception ( Italian : Pontifica Accademia dell'Immacolata ) is a Pontifical Academy of the Roman Curia , which was merged with the International Marian Pontifical Academy on December 4, 2012 .

The forerunner of the academy was a student club founded in 1835 by students from Roman seminaries and the Pontifical Gregorian University . From the Congregation for Catholic Education the club was subordinated to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences with the name "Accademia dell'Immacolata Concezione di MV" on July 7, 1847 and a seat at the Basilica of the Minorites , Santi XII Apostoli , established.

By Pope Pius IX. she was raised to a Pontifical Academy on December 8, 1864. In 1938, with the consent of Pope Pius XI. founded the academic celebration “Omaggio floreale”, which is celebrated annually on December 8th in the Piazza di Spagna at the Colonna dell'Immacolata , the column of the Immaculate, together with the Pope. On December 8, 1988, Pope John Paul II approved the new statute of the Academy, which was confirmed again in 1995.

The purpose of the academy is to research, promote and coordinate studies on Marian dogmas.

The academy and its scientists are presided over by a president. One of the tasks of the President is to ensure communication with the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Pontifical Academies, and to organize the annual meetings. He is automatically a member of the Council for the Coordination of the Pontifical Academies.
