Pontifical of Płock
The Płock Pontifical is a medieval liturgical parchment manuscript from the collections of the cathedral chapter in Płock (Poland).
The book consists of 214 parchment pages measuring 270 × 185 mm. It belongs to the type Pontificale Romano-Germanicum (also called Ottonian pontifical ). The work was created in the 12th century for the Archdiocese of Gniezno . Around 1250 the pontiff came to Płock. It was created by the copyist Nikolaus, son of Stanislaus .
During the Second World War , the work was confiscated in the spring of 1940 by a group of Königsberg art historians in the Płock diocesan library. It was in the library of the Albertus University in Königsberg until 1944, together with other manuscripts from Polish collections . Since then it has been considered lost.
The pontifical was acquired on May 28, 1973 at the Hartung & Karl auction house in Munich at a price of DM 6200 and has since been in the Bavarian State Library under the shelf mark Clm 28938.
In 1977 the work was identified by Polish scholars as the Płock Pontifical. Since then, the Bishop's Curia Płock has requested the return of the work several times (1984, 1986, 1992) without success. After Bishop Piotr Libera had contacted the director of the Bavarian State Library directly at the beginning of 2015 , the work was returned on April 14, 2015 through the mediation of the Polish Foreign Ministry and handed over to the treasury of the Diocesan Museum in Płock.
