Poortgebouw
The Poortgebouw ( German gate building ) is a building in the south of the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands on the Meuse . It is a Dutch Rijksmonument .
description
The eclectic building with Romanesque echoes consists of two four-story wings with flat hipped roofs, which are connected by a recessed two-story transverse structure. The access to the port runs under the transverse structure, the actual gate building, with central risers on both sides . The building is made of red brick , the decorative elements such as window parapets, risalits and friezes are set off in white plaster.
history
The house was built in 1879. The client was Lodewijk Pincoffs , architect JSC van de Wall . The construction was the beginning of the port development on the left bank of the Meuse.
It initially served as the headquarters of the Rotterdam Trade Association ( Rotterdamsche Handelsvereiniging, RHV ). In 1879 the Rotterdam Trade Association had to file for bankruptcy, whereupon Pincoffs fled to America . The bankruptcy was also the reason why the second building of the same type on the right bank of the Meuse was not built. Between 1880 and 1901 the Poortgebouw was the headquarters of the Holland America Line . Until 1978 it was the head office of the Rotterdam port company . In 1980 it was considered to set up an Eroscenter in the building. But these plans then came to nothing.
It was used by squatters between 1980 and 1982 , after which a lease was negotiated with them. In 2005 a contractor bought the building with the aim of converting it into an office building. On March 30, 2010 the court in The Hague ruled that the building contractor must not force the tenants to evacuate.
