Pop-Tart is a biscuit of US origin that is marketed by the Kellogg’s company. The pop tart is a sweet pastry and is usually heated in the toaster.

Creation and marketing

Pop-Tarts had their origin in the 1960s at the manufacturer Post Cereals, who had developed a process to keep dog food fresh by shrinking it in foil without cooling. Post then had the idea of using this process for a new breakfast product that could be warmed up in the toaster. This product was intended as a supplement to the company's breakfast cereals that were consumed unheated . In 1964 they were first introduced to the general public under the name Country Squares .

Kellogg's, a major competitor to Post Cereals, launched its own product just six months after this success. The name was based on the pop art of Andy Warhol chosen a very popular in that era of art. The "Pop-Tarts" (in German about "Pop-Törtchen") were born. Pop out also means "jumping out", alluding to jumping out of the toaster.

In 1967, pop tarts with icing were first introduced after it was determined that it was not destroyed in the toasting process. Sales began in the UK in the 1990s, albeit with significantly less success than in the United States.

Kellogg's is still selling the pop tarts in the US with great success to this day, over two billion pieces every year according to its own information. However, they can still be purchased in Canada, Great Britain and Ireland. Sales in Australia have not been continued since 2005, but they are still available there as imported goods. In Germany, Pop-Tarts are also available as imports and in a few supermarkets, including some branches of real and Edeka .

Pop-Tarts can also illustrate the application of data mining methods in retail marketing : In 2004 , the retail group Walmart found a temporal connection between severe weather warnings of an approaching hurricane and a massively increased demand for Pop-Tarts in the USA .

Composition and variants

A pop tart is a pocket made of two layers of dough with a sweet filling compound (such as jam) in the middle. Often the baked goods are covered with icing . Although they can also be eaten cold, pop tarts are typically baked in a toaster and consumed warm. When packaged, they can be stored without additional refrigeration.

Due to the demand, various flavors and variations of the pastry have been developed over the years; the most popular are chocolate, apple, glazed strawberry, glazed with brown sugar and cinnamon, cherry and S'Mores (chocolate marshmallow crackers).
