Porcellana platycheles is a type of cancer belonging to the porcelain cancer family. It occurs in the Mediterranean and the Eastern Atlantic from the Shetland Islands to the Canary Islands .
Way of life
The animals rarely larger than one centimeter live in shallow water within the intertidal zone . The crabs can usually be found under stones to which they cling to with their legs. They are filter feeders and hardly move from their place without disturbance.
Multiplication
The larval development of Porcellana platycheles takes place via two Zoëa larvae via a megalopa up to the adult . Megalopa, which is morphologically very similar to the adult animal, develops under laboratory conditions between two and three weeks after hatching; just over half of the hatched animals reach this stage.
