from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Porsche Challenge is a racing game for 1 to 2 players developed by the Sony development studio Soho . It was released in 1997 exclusively for Sony's PlayStation and was developed in close collaboration with Porsche . The game received very good awards from the trade press. Not only the route graphics were praised, but above all the level of detail of the vehicles, and especially that of the drivers.

In single player mode you drive against 5 computer controlled opponents. In two-player mode, in which the image is divided horizontally ( split screen ), you can only drive against the human competitor. Further vehicles could not be realized in this mode due to the high level of detail of the routes and vehicles, as well as the limited working memory of the PlayStation.

Initially, the only vehicle that can be controlled is a Porsche Boxster , as an open or closed roadster, depending on your choice. After the game has been completed or a cheat has been entered, the enhanced version Boxster S is also available. There are 4 main routes to choose from; another 4 can be unlocked later and can also be driven in mirror-inverted. Similar to Ridge Racer , however, these are the known routes that have only been extended by a few sections. As an innovative feature, abbreviations can be found on every route, which can be driven or blocked depending on the course of the game.

The so-called "Challenge" mode or individual races are available as game modes. The player can then choose one of six characters that differ in their driving behavior. In addition, it can be determined whether the driving behavior is more simulation-heavy or - in "Arcade" mode - easy to handle. As a bonus, short FMV films can be activated in which z. B. the creation of the Boxster is described.
