Port Sorell is a town of 2,211 people on the north coast of Tasmania , 117 kilometers north of Launceston , 20 kilometers from Devonport and 254 kilometers from Hobart .

history

The Aboriginal Punnilerpanic tribe lived in this area until the Europeans arrived . In 1805 the Rubicon River, which flows through the place, was explored. The whites settled on the river and founded the village of Burgess, which was named after Lieutenant Governor William Sorell in Port Sorell in 1822 . At the time, the place was the most frequented port and the largest city on the Tasmanian north coast. Port Sorell housed a prison on Watch House Hill, which was later leveled. Furthermore, the city is said to have been completely destroyed by a bush fire once in its history.

Port Sorell is a place bustling with tourists in summer for water sports, hiking and experiencing the wilderness. Water skiing and kayaking are available on the coastal waters, but also the tranquility of sand dunes . Near Port Sorell are the beaches Shearwater, Hawley Beach and Freers Beach, which attract visitors and gave this place the name Port of Golden Beaches . Fishing from the on-site pontoon, a ramp for launching boats into the water, a campsite and a golf course are available. The Rubicon River flows through the city . The Narawntapu National Park , which is not far from the town, is located on this river .
