Porter is an impact crater to the south of the moon's front . It covers part of the north-eastern edge of the great whale plain of Clavius . The rim of the crater is eroded, the inside has a central mountain .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1970 after the American amateur astronomer and telescope maker Russell W. Porter .
