Guingola Agave is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Creme Brulee Agave".

description

Agave guiengola is monocarpic, grows solitary and forms runners with a diameter of 30 to 40 cm. The thick, broad, white, green to bluish, egg to lanceolate, runny, densely warty, irregularly arranged leaves are up to 57 cm long and 13 to 15 cm wide. The cream-colored leaf margins are toothed with variable dark brown. The needle-like gray to brown terminal spine is 1.5 to 4 cm long.

The year-old, slender, inflorescence becomes 2 to 3 m high. The pale yellow to white colored flowers are 33 to 35 mm long and appear in clusters near the base.

The elongated, brown three-chambered capsule fruits are 22 to 24 mm long.

The flowering period extends from February to March.

Systematics and distribution

Agave guiengola grows endemically in Mexico in the state of Oaxaca on limestone slopes at an altitude of 100 to 1000 m. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by Howard Scott Gentry was published in 1960.

Agave guiengola is a representative of the Choritepalae section , whose members have tubeless flowers. Nevertheless, differences to the two other representatives of the section, the geographically isolated Agave bracteosa and Agave ellemeetiana, are recognizable in shape and leaf structure and the deviating seed morphology. Agave guiengola only grows at the type location in Cerro Guiengola near Tehuantepec in Oaxaca. Individuals are grown at the Huntington Botanic Garden in San Marino, California .
