Agave bracteosa is a species of plant of the genus Agave ( Agave ) in the subfamily of the Agave family (Agavoideae). An English common name is "Spider Agave".

description

Agave bracteosa grows as an open, small to medium-sized rosette and forms clusters by sprouting from above-ground leaf axils . The relatively few leaves, which are convex and roughened in the lower third, are bent over and bent back. The yellow-green leaf blade is 50 to 70 centimeters long and 3 to 5 centimeters wide. The leaf margins are very finely serrated. There is no end pin at the tip of the blade .

The "eared" inflorescence is ascending to upright, is between 1.2 and 1.7 meters long and is densely flowered in the upper third. The partial inflorescences have paired flowers 22 to 26 millimeters long with white to light yellow tepals . The spindle-shaped ovary is between 12 and 14 millimeters long. The 50 to 60 millimeter long stamens protrude clearly.

Distribution and systematics

Agave bracteosa grows endemically in the Mexican states of Nuevo León and Coahuila in the north of the Sierra Madre Oriental at altitudes of 900 to 1700 meters, scattered on limestone cliffs and on rocky slopes. It is associated with numerous types of succulents and cacti.

It was first described in 1882 by Sereno Watson .

Agave bracteosa is a representative of the Choritepalae section . The species that differs within the group is characterized by its leaf and flower structure. It was therefore classified by Ullrich in the Serrulatae group .
