Clavius is a large impact crater in the southern highlands on the Earth-facing side of the moon . It was named after the German- Italian mathematician and Jesuit astronomer Christophorus Clavius (1537 / 1538–1612).

The crater measures about 225 km in diameter. Inside there are a large number of craters of various sizes, the smaller of which are suitable for testing the resolving power of amateur telescopes. The semicircular arrangement, which begins with the crater Rutherfurd (48 × 54 km) on the southern rim of Clavius and continues from there with the increasingly smaller craters Clavius D, C, N, J and JA, is striking. In the northeast, Clavius' crater wall is interrupted by the 52 km large crater Porter .
