List of rose varieties

The origin of the Portland roses , also Rosa × portlandia , was unclear for a long time. Today it has been clarified by DNA analyzes that it was the result of a cross between a Gallicarose and the Autumn Damascus Rose . New when Portland roses were introduced was their ability to continue to bloom well into autumn.

history

The first Portland rose was 'Duchess of Portland', dedicated to Margaret Cavendish Bentinck , who is said to have discovered it on a trip to Italy in Paestum and brought it to England.

Portland roses were very popular in the 19th century until they were replaced by Bourbon roses and Remontant roses. In 1884, 84 varieties were cultivated in Kew Gardens . Today around a dozen varieties are still preserved. Collectors of old roses still appreciate the properties of Portland roses today: compact growth up to about 1 m in height, very frost hardy, wonderful fragrance, continuous flowering until autumn in pink and red shades, also suitable as a stem for small gardens. The flowers are always a little hidden in several, on firm, short stems close to the last leaf. They are not very susceptible to disease. Portland roses work well in modern gardens and are recommended for beginners.
