The Portsmouth Square is a 12,000 square meter space in Duisburg . It is the forecourt of Duisburg Central Station and named after the English twin city of Portsmouth .

history

The station forecourt was built between 1931 and 1934 as part of the new construction of Duisburg Central Station. When the new train station went into operation, the trams coming from Düsseldorf and the south of the city were given a new underground terminus in front of the train station and below the current square. Stairs led the passengers to the station entrance.

On April 24, 1955, the city began construction of the first German city motorway , which, after its completion in May 1957, led under the station plate. The tram was moved to Mercatorstrasse, which runs parallel to the forecourt.

In memory of one of the first German- British town twinning , the square was given its current name in 1982.

In the course of the widening of the federal highway 59 , the city highway called the north-south road for a long time after its construction , the square got its current size: the expanded highway was covered in autumn 2010 with a 3000 m² station plate.

In 2013, the redesign of the square was discussed in the Charrette process . The station forecourt is to get a facelift by September 2017.
