Portugal Cove-St. Philip's is a small town ( Town ) on the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador belonging island Newfoundland . The city is located on the northeast coast of Conception Bay about 15 km from the provincial capital St. John's . The place has 8,147 inhabitants. The former twin city was created in 1992 through administrative merger of the small towns of Portugal Cove, St Philip's and Hogan's Pond and various surrounding areas.
history
The place Portugal Cove (now a district) was probably named after Fernando de Portugal, duque de Guarda y de Trancoso . Gaspar Corte Real was commissioned by him to research this area in the 1500s. St. Philip's was settled in the late 18th century. The first settlers were John Squires and Robin Tucker in 1790. The first written record of Portugal Cove was in 1630 on a map.
