The Posawien hood chicken is an endangered old Croatian hood chicken breed .
Breed history
The breed attracted the attention of Croatian chicken farmers in the 1990s. The breed is found throughout Posavia , but mainly in the Sava region and the area around the city of Dugo Selo. You could also call them savage chickens.
The aim of organized breeding is to preserve this typical old breed of country fowl . First of all, it was important that the breed retained its characteristics, such as B. their good growth rate, the yellow legs, or their resistance typical of country fowl breeds. The second phase is about stabilizing the colors. Fortunately, the preservation of the Posavian crested chickens had started in time. The so-called "Žvivičarka" was not so lucky, this breed is probably extinct, unless it can be back-crossed with backbreeding, as was done with the aurochs ( Bos primigenius ).
In 2004 the Croatian Small Animal Breeding Association recognized the breed standard of the Posavian crested chickens. After that the breed was presented at several European shows: in Prague , Leipzig or in Nitra . The breed was recognized in 7 different colors by the European Small Animal Breeding Association in 2009. Since 2007 there have been efforts to breed other colors such as B. a black and white piebald. This was presented at several exhibitions in 2009 and recognized by the Croatian Small Animal Breeding Association. The Posavian crested chickens are recognized in Croatia in 8 different colors.
They are now also being bred in Austria and Germany , especially in the striped color.
At the moment there are also discussions about a possible breeding of a dwarf version.
