Posidonius is an impact crater on the northeastern front of the moon on the edge of the Mare Serenitatis . To the southeast of it lies the somewhat smaller Chacornac crater , to the north the Lacus Somniorum and the Daniell crater .

The rim of the crater is irregular and scalloped, the interior is flooded by the lavas of the Mare Serenitatis and has a system of groove structures , the Rimae Posidonius .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Greek philosopher Poseidonios .
