Poste restante
Post restante is the German term for the term “poste restante” used in international postal traffic. It describes the possibility of not delivering mail to the mail recipient personally or placing it in his house mailbox, but rather storing it in a post office until it is picked up by the mail recipient.
Availability of the service
The possibility of sending something poste restante is basically possible at all post offices in all member countries of the Universal Postal Union . In the past, this was the common way for travelers to have their mail delivered to them if the exact address was not known on the itinerary.
Poste restante in Germany
Until August 2012, DHL and Deutsche Post AG only stored letters, but no parcels from German senders. Instead, there are packing stations in larger cities . Since September 2012 it has also been possible to have parcels delivered to selected post offices. As a member of the Universal Postal Union, Swiss Post enables letters and parcels to be stored from abroad. Storage is only possible in selected branches.

The "poste restante" mailings were first mentioned in Prussia in 1824. At these times, however, it was customary to pick up the letters at the post office, where they were kept for up to 3½ months. After 14 days, it was put on a list and posted publicly for 3 months.
In 1875 the name: "poste restante" was officially changed to "poste restante". In the address, the place of destination and the addressee had to be specified in such a way that any uncertainty was avoided. This also applied to items marked with poste restante for which Swiss Post had to provide a guarantee. For other items marked “post restante”, letters or numbers could be used instead of the name of the addressee, and later also small sentences. Shipments marked "poste restante" remained for 3 months and were only then returned to the sender. In 1878 the shipment was stored for a month. If it is a poste restante consignment with cash on delivery, only 7 days. 1892 expanded to include broadcasts with live animals, which returned after 2 days at the latest.
Since 1900 the retention period has been a) 2 times 24 hours for shipments with live animals, b) 7 days for cash on delivery shipments and c) 14 days for other shipments, calculated from the day after arrival.
Since December 12, 1908, post cards were issued by the post offices for a writing fee of 50 pfennigs, which all post offices counted as identification. This was followed on June 1, 1910 post office cards , which were issued on request for a writing fee of 25 pfennigs. Post office cards entitle the holder to receive normal letters that have been received without a personal address at the number given on the card. It was not a condition for using poste restante items.
Between May 6, 1920 and November 30, 1923, a surcharge was levied on the carriage fee. From January 1, 1922 to November 30, 1923, a fee was charged if you wanted to pick up your poste restante item outside of counter hours, or if you asked for one.
Since 1929, among other things, a fee has been charged for poste restante parcels up to March 1, 1963. It does not appear again until July 1, 1974 as a holding fee, equal to the parcel delivery fee. It could be paid in advance by the sender. Post office cards were not permitted in the Soviet occupation zone.
On June 1, 1991 the post card was abolished by the Deutsche Bundespost.
