Postal code (Australia)
Australian postcodes are used within postal addresses to sort and deliver letters , parcels or small packages in Australia . They are administered and distributed by Australia Post .
history
The postcodes valid in Australia today have four digits and are written after the destination, in addition to an alphabetical extraction code . They were introduced in 1967 by the Postmaster-General's Department (PMG). A postcode was assigned to each post office. They are replacing older systems such as alphanumeric sort codes in Melbourne (N3 or N5) and some areas of New South Wales .
format
The zip code is written at the end of the address:
- Mrs. Elisabeth Taylor
- 15 Victoria Street
- SYDNEY NSW 2000
Hand-addressable envelopes usually have four orange rectangles at the bottom right, in which the postcode is written. This system of postcode squares was introduced in 1990 in order to increase the reading rate of the then still error-prone OCR technology.
Geographical classification
The first two digits usually indicate the state or region.
