Posto administrativo (Portugal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A posto administrativo ( Portuguese administrative office ) was the smallest administrative unit in the majority of the Portuguese overseas territories in the 20th century.

The postos administrativos were headed by an officer who had extensive powers for his administrative unit (administration, police, health, taxes, justice). Among the postos administrativos there could be other subordinate administrative units that corresponded to the traditional areas of authority of local leaders, who in turn were subordinate to the head of the posto administrativo .

In 1975 postos administrativos existed in Angola , Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique . In Portuguese Timor , the posto administrativo stood between the superordinate distrito or circunscrição and the underlying sucos . In Cape Verde , Macau , São Tomé and Príncipe and Portuguese India , there were no more postos administrativos at that time , as these had already been converted into freguesias .
