The Postplatz ( Ukrainian Поштова площа Poschtowa ploshcha ) is a square in the Ukrainian capital Kiev .
The square is located near the right Dneprufer in the historic Podil district of Kiev and was named after a stagecoach station with post office and inn that stood here from 1846 to 1919.
history
Post Square is one of the oldest squares in Kiev. Archaeological studies have shown that there was a settlement at this place as early as the fourth century. At the time of the Kievan Rus it was probably one of the eight markets mentioned in the Nestor Chronicle .
Development
The outstanding building on the square is the Church of the Nativity of Christ . A memorial to the first Kiev tram has stood on the square since 1992 , which connected Postplatz with European Square from 1892 until this line was closed in 1975 . Today the square has a metro station, which is served by the U-2 line, and the valley station of the Kiev funicular .
There is also the Kiev river port building ( Київський річковий порт ) for passenger boat trips on the Dnieper and the historic post office, renovated in 1993, the only preserved old classical building on the square, which now houses a post museum.
