Potential assessment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The potential estimation is a biological method for the evaluation of the biotope diversity based on the estimation of possible occurrences of animal species .

Procedure and methodology

Usually, in the first step, all relevant investigations that have been carried out in the area concerned are compiled. For this purpose, people who are familiar with the area, who have sometimes been carrying out regular observations for many years, are interviewed and information about the occurrence of target species (mostly FFH species or species protected under the BNatSchG ) is recorded.

On the basis of the available data as well as current distribution atlases of individual animal groups, a professional assessment is then given with regard to the potential occurrence of other protected species.

The following classification is widely used:

  • aN current evidence: The species has been verified in the current investigations for the area in question.
  • PV to assume potential occurrence: The species can occur in the area because suitable habitats are available and the evaluated faunistic data also suggest a possible occurrence or the species was detected in the area before the time of investigation.
  • pVn potential occurrence unlikely: Although suitable habitats are available in the area for this species, their occurrence is, however, due to knowledge of distribution and the like. a. not likely at the moment.
  • Va occurrence to be excluded: There are no suitable habitats for this species in the area or the analysis of the available data on distribution does not reveal any indication of a possible occurrence.

application

The potential assessment does not replace current surveys of the individual animal groups. As a method, it represents a financially favorable and simple assessment for the client in legal planning procedures.
