Tom Werner

Thomas Charles "Tom" Werner (born April 12, 1950 in New York City , New York ) is an American television producer , screenwriter , director and businessman . He is the younger brother of the director Peter Werner .

Early life

Werner was born in New York City and graduated from Harvard University with an English degree .

Television career

In 1975 Werner became director of East Coast Prime Time. In 1979 he was promoted to Senior Vice President of Prime-Time Development. Werner was involved in the discovery and promotion of Hollywood greats such as Robin Williams , Tom Hanks and Billy Crystal .

Werner co-founded the Carsey-Werner Society with Marcy Carsey in 1980. In this role, he was the executive producer of television programs such as The Bill Cosby Show and Roseanne . In 1996 he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame and in 1999 he was honored at the Museum of Television and Radio .

Werner and Carsey were close friends and frequent advisers to Bill and Hillary Clinton during the administration of President Bill Clinton .

Sports investor

On June 14, 1990, he and 14 other investors bought the San Diego Padres from Major League Baseball for $ 75 million. Werner's tenure as majority owner ended when John Moores acquired 80% of the shares on December 22, 1994 for $ 80,000,000. Werner kept a 10% stake in the franchise until he sold it to Moores before the 2007 season. Werner has been chairman of the Boston Red Sox since 2002 and chairman of the English Premier League club Liverpool FC since 2010 .
