Potnia is a genus of humpback chirps (Membracidae) from the family of round-headed cicadas (Cicadomorpha) from the superfamily of the Membracoidea .

features

The insects are about 6 to 8 millimeters long. The color varies from yellowish to dark yellow, sometimes with dark spots. The body is characterized by a pronotum , which has an unpaired horn or an appendage at the top and another appendage pointing backwards. The forward-facing process sometimes has red or dark spots and in males it can be reduced or even absent. The front wings are transparent and, when at rest, extend further back than the pronotum. The femur of the hind legs is significantly shorter than that of the middle legs. There are several genera that are similar in habit and can be distinguished through closer examination: Alchisme , Ochropepla and Sakakibarella .

Way of life

The individuals of the species of this genus usually occur in clusters that stay together even if they are disturbed. When the females lay eggs, they make crescent-shaped incisions in the stems, which they then cover with a thin white substance. In addition, the females make incisions in the stalk above and below the point where they lay the eggs on the stem. The females stay with the egg packet until the larvae hatch and guard them. The larvae use the incisions to suck up plant sap. Some species of Potnia are associated with hymenoptera . For example, Potnia granadensis often occurs together with the stingless honey bee Oxytrigona tatiaira and ants of the species Ectatoma ruidum .

Distribution and types

The genus contains 17 species that occur exclusively in the Neotropic . The distribution area extends from central Mexico south to northern Argentina. They mainly occur in humid biotopes in the lowlands.
