biography

Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer is probably identical with Hans Wilhelm Pottgießer, who was baptized on October 11, 1637 in St. Laurenz in Cologne as the son of the painter Theodor Pottgießer and his wife Katharina. Alfried Hirth discusses in his dissertation the possibility that Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer could also be identical with a bearer of the same name who was baptized on August 12, 1626 in Groß St. Martin in Cologne, but rejects this theory for understandable reasons.

The painter Theodor Pottgießer and his wife Katharina had their son Johann baptized on December 7, 1634, in this baptism entry the father's first name is given as "Dederich". Thus, Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer's father is probably identical to the painter Dietrich Pottgießer, who was accepted into the guild in 1622 and was magistrate in 1641.

Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer was accepted into the guild as a master craftsman in February 1656.

Between 1663 and 1680, the painter Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer and his wife Gertrud Fedders had nine children.

In 1683 Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer is named as Cologne councilor. That it was not Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer, born in 1626, but the painter, who was probably born in 1637, is proven by the fact that the number 44 was placed after his name in the painter's register , which stood for the council of 44 men, who was called to the ordinary Senate of the city on special occasions and important decisions.

On August 16, 1690, a grandson of the painter Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer was baptized in the name of his grandfather without the latter being a godfather. This is the reason why it is assumed that Johann Wilhelm Pottgießer had already died at this point in time.
