Potzlower Roland

The Potzlower Roland is a wooden Roland figure . Its first location in 1305 was the entrance to Potzlow in what is now the municipality of Oberuckersee in the Uckermark district , Brandenburg . Its size is about 2 meters.

history

When Margrave Waldemar named the town of Potzlow a market town in 1305 , a first stone Roland was erected as a symbol of market rights. The neighboring city of Prenzlau, as the owner of the hitherto sole market rights, is said to have disagreed with the situation because from then on it had to share market rights with Potzlow. In a night-and-fog operation, she is said to have removed the stone Roland from Potzlow. In 1871, during excavations near Potzlow, the remains of a stone roland were found, which confirmed this. The Potzlower built a new Roland in 1727. It consisted of a simple block of spruce wood with two arms and a roughly outlined head. The wheelwright Hensel from Potzlow is named as the creator of this simple wooden statue.

In 1898 the wooden roland was restored due to rot damage and placed on a stone base. In 1991 the city administration replaced the old Roland with a new statue, which is now on the market square. Compared to the old version, he now stretches one arm out and holds a market sword in the other hand.

The old wooden Roland now stands in the tower of the church in Potzlow. location
