Presidential election in Abkhazia 2011

The 2011 presidential election in Abkhazia took place on August 26th of that year. They became necessary after Sergei Bagapsch , previous president of the internationally largely unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia , died in office on May 29, 2011. The elections were described by independent observers as being relatively free and democratic.

Candidates

Three candidates stood for election:

  • Alexander Ankwab , Interim President (since 2011), Vice President (2010–2011), Prime Minister (2005–2010)
  • Raul Chadschimba , Vice-President (2005–2009), Prime Minister (2003–2004), Defense Minister (2002–2003)
  • Sergei Schamba , Prime Minister (since 2010), Foreign Minister (1997–2004, 2004–2010)
