Espostoa utcubambensis is a species of plant in the genus Espostoa from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the distribution area along the Río Utcubamba .

description

Espostoa utcubambensis grows tree-shaped with branched shoots and reaches heights of 5 to 7 meters. A trunk up to 1.5 meters high and 15 centimeters in diameter is formed. The close together, upright, cloudy gray-green shoots have a diameter of 9 centimeters. There are 25 to 30 ribs . The two to six initially red-brown central spines turn whitish later. The longest of them faces downwards. The central spines are up to 0.6 centimeters long on young shoots. They are up to 2 centimeters long on the trunk. The eleven to twelve whitish radial spines are up to 5 millimeters long. The eight to twelve ribs cephalium consists of evenly arranged gray bristles.

The tubular, creamy white flowers are 5.2 inches long and 3.5 inches in diameter. The fruits remaining in the cephalium are white.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Espostoa utcubambensis is distributed in Peru in the Amazon region in the valley of the Río Utcubamba on steep, rocky slopes in the deciduous forest at altitudes of 1350 to 1950 meters.

It was first described in 2003 by Graham J. Charles .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
