On June 1, Ankwab announced his resignation, and Parliamentary President Valery Bganba was appointed interim president. At the same time, a new election was scheduled for August 24th. The opposition politicians Sergei Shamba and Raul Hadschimba were given the best opportunities in advance .

According to the preliminary results of the election commission, Chadschimba won the election with 50.57%. The European Union and the United States had called the election illegal. No observers were sent by international organizations. The final result confirmed the preliminary result. Khadjimba received 50.6% of the vote and Aslan Bschania received 35.9% of the vote.
