Pražský výběr is a Czech rock band . It was created in 1976 as a jazz rock- oriented branch of the Prague Big Band . After a few changes, it consisted of singer and keyboardist Michael Kocáb, guitarist Michal Pavlíček, bassist Vilém Čok and drummer Jiří Hrubeš from 1981.

Band history

In the 1980s the four-piece combo became one of the most popular Czechoslovak bands. Due to the influence of rock guitarist Pavlíček, her style changed to hard rock , with borrowings from new wave and punk . The official career in the communist era was short: In 1982 director Juraj Herz shot the experimental film Straka v hrsti (the magpie in the hand), for which Pražský výběr provided the soundtrack. The film was banned immediately, and the band was banned from performing for five years. The album of the same name could initially only be distributed underground on magnetic tapes. The theme music of the children's TV series The Visitors from 1983 was recorded by Pražský výběr based on a composition by Karel Svoboda .

Shortly before the Velvet Revolution , the band reappeared in public - at times under the shortened name Výběr and with Klaudius Krišpín as the new drummer. In 1987 the second studio album was released, in 1988 the record Straka v hrsti was also officially released. In 1992 the live album Adieu CA followed , a recording of a concert for the withdrawal of the Red Army , on which Frank Zappa also appeared as a guest star. Although the group continued to exist, all members pursued their own solo and band projects in parallel, and Michael Kocáb also began a career as a member of parliament.

After the breakup between front man Kocáb and guitarist Pavlíček in 2006, Kocáb and drummer Krišpín founded the band Pražský výběr II together with bass man Richard Scheufler , singer Zlata Kinská and guitarist Glenn Proudfoot , which stayed together from 2006 to 2009. Kocáb used the working term techno-punk-metal for their style.

The last chapter in the band's history was the comeback tour in autumn 2012, for which Kocáb, Pavlíček, Čok and the two drummers Hrubeš and Krišpín got together.
