Praecambridium is an extinct animal genus of the Ediacarium , which is part ofthe Proarticulata tribe (or the clade Bilateriomorpha ).

Occurrence and first description

Praecambridium was discovered in the Ediacara Hills in South Australia and was first scientifically described by Martin Fritz Glaessner and Mary Julia Wade in 1966 .

etymology

The generic name is made up of the Latin prefix prae (before, before) and the name of the fossil Cambridium Homy, 1957 . This genus of molluscs from the Cambrian resembles the segmental arrangement of the precambridium with its attachment points of the adductor muscles on the inside of the shell . The taxon name sigillum is the Latin name for seal .

Taxonomy

Praecambridium sigillum is an extinct taxon, which superficially resembles segmented arthropods (arthropods) such as trilobites or jaw-claw carriers (chelicerates). Most paleontologists now consider the fossil to be part of the Proarticulata tribe and the Cephalozoa class .

description

Praecambridium sigillum has at least five pairs of segments that gradually widen towards the head end. The very small, disk-like, maximum 0.2 millimeter thick fossil has an oval shape. It reaches 5 millimeters in length and up to 4 millimeters in width.
