Luz was part of the municipality of Santa Maria until it became independent at the beginning of the 18th century.

From 1928, bathers regularly visited the beach of Luz. Since then, the place has developed into a well-known seaside resort, especially since the beginning of mass tourism in the Algarve from the 1960s.
