Pregnan is a collective name for certain polycyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons that are among the basic components of steroids , the steranes . It consists of a tetracyclic skeleton with three fused cyclohexane rings and one fused cyclopentane ring. It differs from the Gonan in that it has two additional methyl groups and one ethyl group . There are two different pregnanes which differ in stereochemistry in the 5-position. These are 5 α -Pregnane and 5 β- Pregnane:
Pregnandione , pregnenolone and pregnanediol , among others, are derived from 5 β- pregnane .
