Preston Trombly
Preston Andrew Trombly (born December 30, 1945 in Hartford (Connecticut) ) is an American composer and visual artist .
life and work
Preston Trombly studied composition at the University of Connecticut with Charles Whittenberg , at Yale University with Bülent Arel and Mario Davidovsky and at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood with George Crumb . His awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship (1974/75) and two NEA scholarships. Trombly taught intermittently at Vassar College and the Catholic University of America . He also worked as a saxophonist, jazz clarinetist and music commentator for various New York radio stations.
Trombly's musical works are mainly intended for chamber ensembles, some with additional tape recordings. Compositions emerged a. a. on behalf of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center and the Fromm Foundation .
More recently, Trombly's activities have shifted more to the field of fine arts. Exhibitions of his collage-based works took place a. a. at The National Arts Club in New York .
