Prestongrange Church

The Prestongrange Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Prestonpans in the Council Area East Lothian . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.

history

A church in what is now Prestonpans is already recorded in the 12th century. In the course of Rough Wooing under Henry VIII , this was destroyed by English troops. Members of the Preston Lineage of Clan Hamilton , who had their family seat in nearby Preston Tower , donated the land on which the forerunner of today's Prestongrange Church was built to the Church. Built in 1595, it is one of the earliest post-Reformation church buildings in Scotland. The current church was built in 1774. Here, fragments of the older building were integrated.

description

The church building is off the High Street not far from the south bank of the Firth of Forth to the north of Prestonpans. The masonry consists of sandstone blocks that were built into layers of masonry . Quarry stone walls can only be found in the older fragments. The bell tower with a square floor plan rises up on the west side. It closes with an octagonal lantern on which a pointed helmet sits. Tower clocks are installed on all sides underneath. The entrance area with a hipped roof emerges at the foot . A transept leads from the nave behind it on the north side. At the end of it, two arched windows with an overlying ox-eye are installed. Individual arched windows are let into both sides of the transept. On the opposite south side there is a smaller transept, which is similar to the one on the north side. A single large arched window adorns the east side of Prestongrange Church.
