Francis Gavin

Francis J. Gavin (born December 4, 1965 in the USA ) is an American historian , political scientist , and university professor .

Life

Francis Gavin graduated with a 1988 Honors bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago in Chicago , Illinois . This was followed by a post-graduate degree, graduating with a Master of Studies at Keble College of the University of Oxford . The topic of his thesis in 1991 was: The Emergence of the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania during the Interwar Period .

At the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia ended Gavin a master's degree and in 1997 with the work Defending Europe and the Dollar: Money, Security, and the Politics of the US Balance of Payments, 1958-1968 doctorate . At this university he was a lecturer in European and American Diplomatic History at the Institute for History in 1996/1997 and visiting professor for a seminar on international relations in 1998/1999 .

From August 1998 on, Gavin was director of The Presidency and Economic Policy Project at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville , Virginia and Research Fellow of the Presidential Recordings Project at the Miller Center of Public Affairs there . From 2000 to 2014 he was a professor at the University of Texas in Austin , Texas . Since then he has taught political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge , Massachusetts .

Gavin is a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations .

Awards and honors

  • 1995–1996: Andrew W. Mellon Dissertation Fellowship.
  • 2001–2002: Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation donated US $ 35,000 to the Policy Research Project National Security, Nuclear Strategy and Arms Control during the Johnson Presidency: Case Studies and their Implications .
  • 2002: University of Texas Cooperative Society scholarship for the book Gold, Dollars, and Power: The Politics of International Monetary Relations, 1958–1971 .
